BCDR Basics

What is BCDR?

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) means exactly as it sounds. BCDR is about setting up your information technology so that if a disaster occurs, you can easily recovery your data. They are planning and configuration processes which help organizations prepare for disruptive events due to an ice storm, a power outage or something similar. The planning which goes into a business continuity and disaster recovery plan might be extensive depending on the organization, the nature of the business and it’s location.

Despite the size or type of organization, the nature of it’s business and location, a BCDR plan is important. So that the conducting of business is interrupted for the least amount of time.

Planning and Preparation

One of the most critically important IT Services we provide to SMB’s, a business continuity and disaster recovery strategy defines objectives with a contribution from stakeholders. The organization must agree on which IT Systems are critical and then focus on risk tolerance and investment priorities. Then put a solution in place, often including offsite backup, test and maintenance plan.

In partnership with IDC Canada, TeraGo conducted a survey of Canadian organizations and their disaster recovery plans. Surprisingly 45% stated they were not able to identify everything that may jeopardize their organization’s IT infrastructure and the requisite data to operate their business.

Why is Business Continuity Important?

Organizations of all sizes face a growing list of potential threats. Those threats include weather-related disasters and cyber-related hazards.  These trends leave organizations vulnerable to a myriad of new and existing risks. Managing the potential of these risks by establishing a business continuity strategy is critical to the survival of any business in today’s world.

How is Business Continuity Accomplished?

Essentially, business continuity involves a strategy and the implementation of that strategy by setting up IT infrastructure in a way that ensures your data and systems can be recovered in the event of a catastrophic disaster. The strategy is developed in consultation with your team and implemented by an IT Consultant with a background in business continuity. Redundancies are put in place, however, backing up your data on it’s own does not form a business continuity and disaster recovery plan. Policies, Processes and Procedures are put in place so that your team knows what to do in the event of a disaster. These three P’s are crucial to any BCDR plan and mitigate against downtime and increased IT Support costs.

Disaster Recovery Services

What is meant by Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery is the “DR” within a BCDR plan, which aims to maintain business data and systems in the event a cyber attack, sever weather, human error, inside job or other form of disaster. DR gives a businesses and organizations the ability to recovery data in little to no time and resume crucial business functions so that business can continue.

Why is a Disaster Recovery Plan Critical?

Irrespective of the industry within which your organization exists, when an unexpected disastrous event occurs and stops your business from functioning, a business must recover as fast as possible so that it may resume providing services to it’s customers. The more downtime your have, the more money it costs your business in lost productivity, lost revenue and increased IT Support costs. The importance of a Disaster Recovery Plan cannot be overstated.

How is Disaster Recovery Carried Out?

Disaster Recovery is implemented by having redundancies or fail-over server. Your data and critical system gets imaged and thuds backed up to multiple locations. There are various forms of backup one can use but essentially, the various devices, systems, programs, servers and backups form a system which allows one to restore data and systems on command. For this to work, data and systems need to be automatically and frequently imaged to the redundant backup location, often at a data center, cloud server or virtual machine.
