What is it?
Office 365 is the umbrella under which various Microsoft applications are brought together into one cloud-based solution. While these applications may be purchased on their own, there are advantages, especially for business, when used as part of 365. Sold in the form of a monthly or annual subscription, otherwise referred to as Software as a Service (Saas). It features packages for both home and office use.
What's in it?
It depends which plan you choose. The slate includes Word, Excel, OneNote, Powerpoint, Publisher, Access, Visio, Outlook, Exchange, Skype, One Drive, Sharepoint and more. However, Microsoft Azure cloud solutions and services are not included. When you have a subscription, updates are included, so you never have to worry about having the most recent version or issues associated with older versions.
What does it do?
Microsoft Word is a word processing application for drafting written documents. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application used for calculations, managing information including financial information and other similar purposes. OneNote is designed for note taking and references, it is a free-form multi-user collaborative tool. Power-point is an application for designing presentations and documents, Publisher is a tool which helps you with entry-level publishing of documents with an emphasis on layout, Access is a database management system, Visio is a diagramming and vector graphics application, Outlook is an email client with a calendar, task manager, contact manager, note taking, journal, and web browsing. Exchange is Microsoft’s powerful email and calendaring server, mostly used for business purposes. Skype facilitates voice calls and video conferencing between devices and regular phone systems. OneDrive is a file hosting and synchronization service and Sharepoint is a cloud-based collaboration tool which integrates with other applications including the suite of Microsoft services and applications.
Where is it?
Applications may be accessed through a web browser by logging into your account on the Microsoft login page. Many subscriptions include the desktop version whereby users may access it locally, directly on the users computer opposed to visiting a website. The online version and the desktop version would be synched with each other, so you may go back and forth between using the cloud version and the active desktop version. Additionally, users may access applications across multiple devices, including mobile devices, all of which synched with one another. However, Publisher and Access cannot be installed across multiple devices.
How do I get it?
When your email data with another host is transferred to the Microsoft hosting platform server, your email history which existed within a hotmail, Gmail or sympatico would now exist within your new account. Your stored files from Dropbox or Owncloud would be moved to your new account. These transfers take time, depending on the amount of data being transferred. Your admin portal would be setup and your DNS records pointed to your new server. What O365 business subscription is right for you?
To determine the plan or bundle most suitable for your business, one must understand what is included with each. Business plans are categorized as either Business or Enterprise. Each have one single and scalable administration portal. Business subscriptions are designed for small and medium sized business while Enterprise subscriptions are also for business but more advanced for larger sized companies.

Business plans include Business, Business Essentials and Business Premium. Enterprise plans are Pro-plus, Enterprise E1, Enterprise E3 and Enterprise E5.
These plans handle core needs. The Business plan gives you office apps and OneDrive, Business Essentials gets you cloud services including email and Business Premium is for those who need MS office apps and cloud solutions. These bundles are for advanced business needs. Pro-Plus facilitates premium office applications and OneDrive, Enterprise E1 is strictly for cloud services, Enterprise E3 includes both premium office applications and cloud services including email while Enterprise E5 includes everything that E3 provides for plus other advanced features only available in E5 such as MyAnalytics and Power BI Pro, Auto classification, Advanced Data Governance, smart import and customer lock box. There is no limit on the amount of Enterprise users.

This plan also supports a hybrid deployment and includes Microsoft Access and support for shared computer activation (RDS).
Office 365 Enterprise E1
Enterprise E1 is for “email service” and includes Office Online, 1TB of cloud storage using OneDrive for business, email and calendaring via Exchange. IM and online video conferencing using lync, team-sites and internal portals using Sharepoint. Enterprise Social using Yammer and active directory integration. This plan also includes hybrid deployment and in the future may include 365 video.
Enterprise E3 Plan
Enterprise E3 subscription is for “moving your company to the cloud” and includes everything that is included in the Enterprise E1 plan but also includes 6 premium office apps plus smartphone, Windows RT and iPad applications, Access, RDS, compliance with archiving capabilities and information protection services including message encryption and RMS. Where premium office 365 apps are included, add: Group Policy, Push Deployment, Telemetry, Update Controls, BI, IRM, DLP, Archiving & Retention and Enterprise Voice.
